Humberto Ballesteros Capasso

Research Interest

Humberto Ballesteros Capasso is Assistant Professor of Italian and Spanish and Coordinator of Modern Languages at Hostos CC, CUNY. He is the commentator and main academic advisor for a new critical edition of Dante’s Commedia in Spanish, translated by professors Jerónimo Pizarro (Los Andes University) and Norman Valencia (Claremont McKenna College). The first volume, “Infierno,” received a grant from IDARTES in 2018, was published by Milserifas in 2019 and on the same year won a LAD award. In 2021, the second volume, “Purgatorio”, won a PSC-CUNY grant and is currently under development. Ballesteros also writes fiction in his native Spanish and has won several accolades, including the National “Ciudad de Bogotá” Prize for his novel “Razones para destruir una ciudad.” His work has been translated into English, Italian and Portuguese. In the summer he teaches for the “Freedom and Citizenship” program of the Center for American Studies at Columbia University.
