Language placement & proficiency

The Italian Placement exam is for determining which level of Italian language class is suitable for a student. Placement exams are offered before and during the registration period. Students who are unavailable during the scheduled times should send an email with their available dates and times and the Department will arrange for an alternative date. The placement test requires no more than two hours to complete. No dictionaries or other materials are permitted at this exam.

The Italian reading proficiency exam is offered for graduate students as part of their requirements and is also offered at the beginning of each semester, generally on the second Friday of the semester. The date will be prominently posted on the website.  We ask that students register for the exam in advance by sending an email with your name, the name of your program and/or school, and the name and email of your departmental contact to whom we should send the results.   Students have two hours to complete the translation. Paper dictionaries are allowed but not provided.
